Ms. Brown's Grade 11 Gender Studies Class Makes Genderbread
Ms. Brown's Grade 11 Gender Studies class recently ventured into the world of cookie decorating, putting their own spin on the holiday tradition. Drawing inspiration from Sam Killermann's GenderBread person, the class transformed the gingerbread-making experience into a celebration of gender diversity and inclusion.
The GenderBread person explores the complex and multifaceted aspects of gender identity; after learning about this concept, students created their own edible representations.
Cari van der Merwe ’26 played an important role in this activity! She skillfully baked the gingerbread figures the night before, ensuring that the class had delicious canvases to express their interpretations of gender.
Ms. Brown also provided an array of decorations to add the finishing touches. Students used sprinkles, icing, and an assortment of colourful toppings to adorn the cookies, making each one a unique representation of the diverse spectrum of gender identities.
This creative initiative not only brought a sense of holiday cheer to the classroom but also showcased the power of innovative teaching methods in making complex subjects accessible and enjoyable for students.
