Grade 11 Art Students Learn from Guest Artist Nan Sidler

On April 9 and 10, Ms. Morencie’s Grade 11 Art classes had the opportunity to learn from a local watercolour artist, Nan Sidler. Nan's artistic journey spans across various mediums, but her true passion lies in watercolour and graphite. Drawing inspiration from local and international artists like Ann Cossar, Richard Hayman P '92 '94 (a beloved LCS Art Teacher, Coach, and Head of House from 1967-1991), Mary Whyte, and Birgit O'Connor, she honed her painting skills. Additionally, Nan dedicated three years to mastering classical drawing techniques under the guidance of Pauline Bradshaw.

Like LCS, Nan has a deep love for nature and outdoor activities like hiking and canoeing. This passion permeates many of her landscape art pieces.

Our art students were grateful to receive instruction and advice from Nan as they begin their watercolour painting unit. As they learn different techniques, they explored how to capture the essence of nature and translate it onto paper. Nan's expertise inspired our students to approach their artwork from a new perspective.

During the workshop, Nan shared insights into the world of watercolour painting, emphasizing the importance of observation, patience, and experimentation. She guided students through various techniques, from mastering brushstrokes to blending colours seamlessly.

As the workshop concluded, Ms. Morencie expressed her gratitude to Nan for sharing her expertise and passion with the class. She noted the significant impact of Nan's visit, not only on students' technical skills but also on their appreciation for the beauty of the natural world.

With newfound knowledge and inspiration, our Grade 11 Art students are eager to continue their exploration of watercolour painting, guided by the lessons learned from Nan Sidler. We look forward to seeing the growth and creativity of our artists.
