Grade 9s Give Back to the Local Community
As part of the Grade 9 integration week, students had the opportunity to visit a few local charities and organizations where they volunteered their time throughout the afternoon. Here is what some of the students had to say about their experience.
Youth Emergency Shelter

One of the staff members explained the purpose of YES and the building that we were in. She said it is a temporary home for the youth who are from the ages of 16 - 24. The purpose of YES is to help people deal with trauma and provide them with any support they need. She mentioned that one of the common reasons why people escape from their families is because of abusive relationships. I was shocked. I truly recognized how privileged I was.
While I was in the kitchen dusting, I saw that there was a lot of dust everywhere. The woman had said that with everything going on in their lives, they don't have much time to focus on cleaning. I worked with others to clean as much as I could. I felt that it was important to help them because they have more important things to focus on.
Before we left, she gave us the opportunity to ask a few questions. I took advantage and asked two. However, I had a third which I was a little more hesitant to ask.
When we were in the car heading home, I decided to ask Ms Webb my third question:
Q: Are kids ever adopted?
A: Yes
Of course she elaborated on the question, but I felt horrible. Giving up a child is hard, and with everything going on in these people's lives, I understood that you have to go through the worse for it to get better.
ReStore

Habitat for Humanity is a Canadian non-profit organization with a goal to provide people with a safe and trustworthy home. On May 7 and 14, Grade 9 students went to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore at the north Peterborough location. They helped get the store ready for the grand opening the next day by pricing, labeling, and organizing all of the donated items. A portion of the money raised at the ReStore goes towards the local community and helps the less fortunate build homes.

On May 7 and 14, Grade 9 students visited Abbott House, a transition home in Peterborough, Ontario. We had the chance to learn about Abbott House and experience the unfortunate reality for many youth in Peterborough.

For me, this experience reminded me of my adoption. In a way, I think I begun to understand my mother's life and the emotions she went through.
Going to the shelter and cleaning their home was an amazing way to give back to the community. However, I think we can go even further. I believe there is so much more to do for YES and that this is only the beginning of something extraordinary.
