An Update from Mr. Bemrose, Mrs. Bemrose and Ms. Bugeia
It has been a year this week since we staged our award-winning, sold-out production of CHICAGO: High School Edition, and what a difference a year makes! In these unique times, the LCS Musical Theatre program has had to pivot and get creative in order to offer our students a high level of training and continue to nurture their incredible passion for theatre. This year, we have 40 students participating in our highly individualized Musical Theatre program. The students are creating a personal skills portfolio while working on a "Dream Role" of their choice. They are focussing on singing and acting techniques, direction, as well as dance, choreography, and theatre tech — all with safety protocols in place. Each student gets to choose their own pathway in order to build their skills and improve as a performer. Our hope is to have a live performance at the end of the term, but if public health guidelines prevent that, the students will be able to film their pieces on the stage with full lighting and sound.
This week Cameron Grant, a Shaw Festival actor, joined us via web conference for a fantastic monologue workshop. This was made possible by the generosity of Nancy Smith P '87, '90, who generously supports our annual trips to the Shaw Festival. We are all looking forward to other Shaw professionals joining us for dance sessions, dialect, and acting coaching in the weeks ahead. We are also very fortunate to have award-winning Musician, Actor, and Playwright Beau Dixon join our program this year as our Musical Director! Exposing our students to industry professionals is an incredible opportunity to learn from the best.
While we are unable to stage the professional-caliber, full-scale musical production this year that our school and the wider community have grown accustomed to, we are excited that our students will still get an authentic theatre experience. We can't wait for the day the Bryan Jones Theatre is full again and our students can bring down the house.
