Exploring High Falls

If you happen to be one of the few students to wake up in the early morning on Sundays, you will generally be treated to the comfortable sound of silence, and cool crisp air. Occasionally a bird will chirp and the leaves will rustle, but there really isn’t much movement. This past Sunday, eight students crawled out of their beds to participate in a beautiful fall hike into Canadian shield to High Falls. Mr. Johnston loaded up the school van while Mr. McEachern took control of the steering wheel and the playlist. A low groan fell over the group when Mr. McEachern began to play Halloween music. It was clear that the students drowned out the sounds of Michael Jackson’s Thriller with their own music on their Airpods.
The temperature was cold this Sunday morning but the students were prepared for the 5km hike. The friends moved along the trail with leisure and calmness. Gaku Ogawa '22, a runner became excited to move along the trails and the trees at a much faster pace. He was beginning to feel the allure of trail running and the ground under his foot. Other friends came along for some time together in a meditative space. The early morning, the cool air and lack of wind made the walk and exceptionally relaxing.
The first challenge happened closer to the beginning of the trail when hikers had to keep their feet dry and cross a creek. Hiking poles in hand the crew all made it across, the worst being a little bit of mud. Along the way, photos were taken and new friends made. As the group reached the falls, the sound of the crashing waters grew louder. If anyone in the Peterborough or Kawartha area gets the chance, High Falls is a must-do. The waterfall crashes down with a neat looking rooster tail effect and leaves you staring at the movement of the water, the same way a campfire captivates everyone around it. Some snacks were consumed and the hikers left the falls with a great start to their Sunday well before many others were out of bed.
