LEAF: Let's Reset
Students in the LEAF (Lakefield Environmental Action Force) group officially introduced the Let’s Reset campaign and gave an important presentation to our school community in today’s Chapel.
Waste has increased worldwide during COVID-19 due to the necessary demands of safety measures. This includes increased waste on campus. LCS is considered a healthcare facility and must follow the appropriate health care regulations. This means that our dining hall cannot use normal plates or cutlery, but instead has been offering disposable alternatives. With climate change being more relevant than ever, we need to take action to review our daily activities and the damage which waste can cause. One impactful improvement which the LEAF students identified is increasing our composting to the predicted 25 compost bins per week which should be filled.
LEAF put together a fun Kahoot quiz for students to help differentiate what garbage, recycling and compostable materials are and how to dispose of waste properly on campus. For example, the compostable food boxes, once emptied, are stacked on a provided table so that they can later be collected and composted. New waste stations have been installed at Upper and Lower Hadden to help encourage proper disposal.
This week, waste stations were also installed in our pilot houses: Moodie, Uplands and Cooper. Cooper House created a fun instructional video to demonstrate the correct use of the compost bins. Each house has a designated area to collect empty containers. Volunteer opportunities are available for students to collect containers or to sign up as a Peer Educator in the Dining Hall.
Together, we can have an impact and make a positive difference.

Thank you to our pilot residential houses for being leaders in setting up a great example for our community. A special shout out also goes to our student LEAF ambassadors for being leaders and contributing their time to educate their house members on this important issue.

anonymous anonymous1/29/2024 @ 8:44 PMAs a LCS student, I am very glad of seeing my school is doing environmental friendly actions. So I thought the meatless Monday would be a great idea! However, what I discovered was more people start to choose ordering food online, because they cannot bear what was served in the dining hall(Not only increase carbon emission, but not reduce carbon emission from meat consumed). The first mission of our dining hall should be serving what we think is reasonable to put into our mouth, our stomach, after that is improving in environmental friendly, which I am glad to see and hope to find a more reasonable way to improve.
