LCS Students Acknowledge the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women Through Interpretive Dance

In honour of the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women (December 6), members of the LCS community came together to share their hopes for women now and in the future in a chapel program. The program included readings, a moment of silence to pay respect to the 14 women who were murdered in the Ècole Polytechnique massacre, and an interpretative dance performance, given by our Grade 11 Dance class.

“The Grade 11 Dance classes were approached by Ms. Taylor, who runs the DEI club, about whether we would like to participate in this Chapel and we were very honoured to be asked. We created movement phrases based on some journal prompts, including ‘What is a healthy relationship? What is an unhealthy relationship? And what do we hope for women, women adjacent, and female-identifying people in our lives?’” - Mrs. Bemrose (Grade 11 Dance Teacher)

Our DEI Club also created a video featuring LCS students and staff sharing their hope for the women in their lives. Some of the powerful messages included:

“I hope that the women in my life can feel safe.”

“I wish for them to have the ability to pursue life, liberty, and happiness.”

“My hope for the future is that my friends, my sister, and myself, have the ability to walk down the street at night without the fear of being harmed.”

“I want women to have life experiences that continually reaffirm that they’re worthy of equitable treatment and when they experience discrimination, I want them to have access to resources to overcome this and I want them to have trust in their community that they will be supported through this.” - Ms. Taylor (Math and English Teacher, DEI Coordinator)

Our students’ passion for addressing this historic day, the impacts of which are still felt in 2022, was recognized more broadly as CHEX News featured our Grade 11 Dance class’s interpretative dance
