Debating and public speaking is a vibrant and well-respected activity at Lakefield College School. Debaters receive faculty coaching in procedures, strategy and etiquette. School debates and public speaking workshops are held every week and we have both participants and spectators attend these sessions.
The school debating and public speaking team participates in regional, provincial, national and international tournaments. LCS debaters and public speakers have historically done quite well in competitions, often placing in the top three at provincial tournaments.
We are a proud member of the Fulford League, a debate group which is comprised of 19 Ontario independent schools. We compete in three Fulford League debate competitions a year and are hosting the Fall Fulford competition at LCS in the fall of 2016.
The highlights of the team's year are the the Independent School Fulford Cup debates, the Nora McRae public speaking competition, the St. Clement’s Impromptu Debate Competition, the Ontario Student Debate Union Provincial Qualifiers (which we won this year), and the International Independent School Public Speaking Competition. Students regularly attend international public-speaking and debating conferences around the world.
