LCS Students Attend the 2023 International Independent Schools Public Speaking Competition

At Lakefield College School, we are committed to providing our students with exceptional learning opportunities that extend beyond the confines of the classroom. One such opportunity arose when the International Independent School Public Speaking Competition announced its tournament in Vancouver, British Columbia. Eager to participate, two of our outstanding debaters, Fiona ’24 and Morgan ’24, represented LCS at the event hosted by Crofton House School.

From October 18 to 22, Fiona and Morgan immersed themselves in a whirlwind of public speaking and parliamentary-style debates. The event featured a diverse range of competitions, including Persuasive Speaking, Impromptu Speaking, After Dinner Speech, and Dramatic Interpretation Reading. Each student had the chance to compete in various events, honing their skills and receiving invaluable feedback from expert judges. This constructive criticism played a pivotal role in boosting their confidence and refining their public speaking abilities.

Beyond the competitive aspect of the competition, the event allowed our students to be immersed in a unique microcosm of the world, with students hailing from different corners of the globe. Fiona and Morgan had the opportunity to connect with peers from diverse backgrounds, including those from Canada, the United States, and beyond. This global interaction not only broadened their perspectives but also facilitated the forging of friendships with like-minded individuals.

In addition to the rigorous competitions, Fiona and Morgan delved into the heart of Vancouver, immersing themselves in its rich cultural offerings. They had the privilege of visiting the renowned UBC campus, where they received an insightful tour led by passionate alumni of LCS. Exploring the campus provided them with a glimpse into higher education and inspired their academic aspirations.

Furthermore, they explored the vibrant atmosphere of Granville Island, a hub of creativity and craftsmanship. Roaming through the artisan shops and engaging with local artists, Fiona and Morgan gained a deeper understanding of Vancouver's artistic community. These encounters not only enriched their cultural experiences but also supported the local businesses, fostering a sense of community connection.

The highlight of the tournament was the Impromptu Speaking event, where participants were challenged to think on their feet and deliver confident, impromptu speeches on diverse topics. Fiona particularly enjoyed this event, appreciating the opportunity to craft compelling speeches in real-time, showcasing her ability to adapt and articulate her thoughts effectively.

Fiona and Morgan demonstrated exemplary sportsmanship throughout the event. They graciously congratulated the winners in each category, highlighting the spirit of camaraderie and mutual respect that defines such competitions.

This enriching experience not only enhanced our students' public speaking skills but also allowed them to form lasting friendships, gain invaluable life skills, and establish connections within a global network of young intellectuals. As they returned to LCS, Fiona and Morgan brought back with them cherished memories, newfound confidence, and a wealth of stories. We eagerly anticipate future opportunities to participate in events of this nature, fostering the growth and development of our students on a global stage.
