TEDxLakefield College School: Empowering Student Voices and Inspiring Change

On October 4, 2024, Lakefield College School hosted its first-ever TEDx event, organized entirely by students and guided by Mr. Rollwagen. Led by Titus '25 and Evelyn '25, with support from Alvina ’25, Aniece ’25, Angel ’27, Gabe ’25, and Fiona ’26, the event was a celebration of student leadership and an opportunity for the school community to engage with thought-provoking topics and ideas.

TEDxLakefield College School aimed to motivate students to be change-makers by encouraging them to pursue their interests and passions. The event featured a lineup of inspiring speakers who explored diverse themes, sparking curiosity and deepening students' understanding of themselves and the world around them. As Titus ’25 and Evelyn '25 explained, their goal was to create a platform where young voices could be heard and where their peers could gain confidence in public speaking while exploring topics that foster connection, compassion, and positive change.

The Vision Behind TEDxLakefield College School
The idea to organize a TEDx event stemmed from a desire to cultivate a love for public speaking and to create a lasting legacy at Lakefield College School. “We wanted to bring the community together and engage in conversations around the issues that impact our ability to be the change we want to see in the world,” shared Titus '25. Evelyn '25 added that their hope was to leave a tradition where each graduating class could continue to build on this initiative, inspiring the next generation of students.

The theme, “Change Maker,” was thoughtfully chosen to emphasize the importance of taking action and making meaningful contributions to both the local and global communities. As Aniece '25 put it, “Change is a direction, not a destination,” highlighting the ongoing journey of making a difference.

From Vision to Reality: Building the Event
Organizing the event required a strong team and careful planning. The group met regularly, learning from experienced TEDx organizers through Zoom calls and refining their vision. With a clear timeline, they divided tasks based on individual strengths: Titus '25 and Evelyn '25 facilitated meetings, Alvina '25 emceed, Aniece ’25 managed the website, and Gabe '25 organized food and logistics.

Mr. Rollwagen, the Co-Organizer, took on a supportive role, providing advice and guidance while allowing the students to lead the process. “I was there to motivate and add perspective when needed,” he explained. “I really wanted Titus '25, Evelyn '25, and the team to be the visionaries for this event.” His encouragement was crucial, especially when the team faced challenges, such as postponing the event from April to October due to limited speaker availability. Mr. Rollwagen helped them navigate the decision, ensuring they stayed focused and positive.

Lessons in Leadership and Collaboration
Throughout the planning and execution of TEDxLakefield College School, the students honed critical skills in decision-making, effective communication, and teamwork. They learned to balance multiple responsibilities and discovered the importance of trusting their teammates. “Each team member demonstrated leadership in different ways,” Mr. Rollwagen noted. “Titus '25 and Evelyn '25 facilitated meetings, Alvina ’25 emceed and managed the website, while Gabe ’25 organized food and logistics. They all played a part in making this event a reality.”

One of the most memorable moments for the team was seeing their hard work come to fruition. “When the spotlight hit the stage, we knew everything had come together,” they reflected. “It was incredible to watch our peers confidently share their thoughts, inspiring the audience and creating a sense of unity.”

Leaving a Legacy: Inspiring the LCS Community
The impact of TEDxLakefield College School extends beyond the event itself. The organizers hope it will inspire others to take similar initiatives, encouraging more students to step up and share their stories, ideas, and beliefs. “Hosting an event like this shows the power of student voice and agency,” said Mr. Rollwagen. “It’s empowering to see your classmates give powerful speeches, and I hope it motivates others to do the same.”

Reflecting on their experience, the team expressed immense pride in their accomplishments. They recognized the value of perseverance and hard work, as well as the importance of giving back to their community. “We’re so proud of our team and the speakers who took the stage,” said Titus '25 and Evelyn '25.

This event will undoubtedly inspire students to take action, share their voices, and be the change-makers they aspire to be.
