Every year, our community gathers to reflect on what we are most grateful for in honour of Thanksgiving and The Feast of Saint Francis (of Assisi). On Tuesday, October 8, we enjoyed a formal dinner, a Chapel service and the Blessing of the Animals—a return to this annual tradition for the first time in 5 years!
In his early 20s, St Francis left his affluent lifestyle to live in poverty among the poor. He founded an order of monks, now known as the Franciscans. Because of his devotion to those in need and his concern for the environment, Francis became known as the Patron Saint of Animals. And, so we observe the Blessing of the Animals around his Feast Day.
At this year’s Service, many students and LCS staff brought pets from home to be blessed by the Reverend John Runza. This is a fun gathering of the community following a special Thanksgiving dinner.
The Thanksgiving Service and Blessing of the Animals is a festive opportunity to pay particular attention to each other, and the creatures in our midst, and to be conscious of all the gifts we are blessed with.
