This week marked another major highlight of the winter athletic season at LCS as we had the privilege of co-hosting the
2023 OFSAA Nordic Skiing Championships. Over 700 student-athletes from across Ontario came together to compete on Thursday and Friday and we are pleased to say that it was an unforgettable success. After unseasonably warm temperatures, we received a heavy blanket of snowfall on Wednesday night, just in time for the event.
Co-hosting an event like this, across two sites, is complex and would not have been possible without the support of many, including our faculty, staff, students and volunteers who dedicated countless hours preparing the trails and ensuring that the event ran smoothly—thank you to everyone who was involved. In the words of our Nordic Ski Coach Todd Harris, "We are honoured to have hosted the 2023 OFSAA Nordic Skiing Championships. Our school has a longstanding tradition of excellence in winter sports, and it was a privilege to welcome the best high school Nordic skiers from across Ontario to our campus for this exciting and memorable event. We thank everyone involved in bringing OFSAA Nordic to fruition."
It was a true community effort. LCS was thrilled to partner with our friends at
Kawartha Nordic who hosted the four-person sprint relays while we hosted distance events. Our campus boasts some of the best Nordic skiing trails in the area and it served as the perfect setting for racing events. Just a few weeks prior to OFSAA, we had the pleasure of co-hosting another skiing event with Kawartha Nordic—
the Ontario Cup—which saw roughly 200 skiers partaking from February 17 to 19. Despite the difficult snow conditions, both races were extremely successful.
The opportunity to host large-scale athletic events such as these provides a wonderful opportunity for students, faculty, and staff from other schools to visit The Grove and see what makes LCS so unique. It also offers our students the chance to engage with athletes from various parts of the province, and gain insight into the logistics of organizing and volunteering at sporting events. Moreover, our campus and community have a chance to shine and demonstrate the warmth and hospitality that we're known for.
Thank you to local retailers Wild Rock Outfitters, Rundle Nordic, Lakefield Home Hardware, and Kingdon Timber Mart for their support in the lead-up to the 2023 OFSAA Nordic Skiing Championships. We could not have done this without them.
Congratulations to our students on making it to the championships! This is a remarkable achievement and a testament to their hard work, dedication and talent.
