Eclipse Excitement: A Stellar Adventure with Cooper House in Quebec

Last weekend, Cooper House embarked on a trip to Au Diable Vert in Quebec, where they had the rare opportunity to witness a total solar eclipse. Au Diable Vert is less than 2 kilometres from the center of the ‘Path of Totality’ so the sky was dark for 3 minutes and 32 seconds, the longest in Quebec. Thanks to the invitation from and hospitality of Jeremy and Julie Zeitlinger-Fontana P ’26 (parents of Axel ’26), our students were immersed in an unforgettable, adventure-filled weekend.

Staying in rustic cabins amidst the serene beauty of Au Diable Vert's surroundings, our students embraced the spirit of teamwork as they cooked, hiked, and explored together. But the highlight of their trip was undoubtedly the chance to view the solar eclipse from the observatory, nestled within a dark sky preserve.

Led by a local astronomer, our students experienced the magic of totality as the moon passed in front of the sun, casting a temporary darkness upon the land. For over three minutes, they were captivated by the phenomenon unfolding above them—the emergence of stars and the changing weather.

Capturing the moment from above, some of our adventurous students took to the skies with drones, preserving the eclipse in detail.

We are grateful to the Zeitlinger-Fontana family for welcoming Cooper House to Quebec.
