For decades, Lakefield College School’s Grade 12 students have embarked on a time-honoured tradition: the Algonquin Expedition, a four-day canoe trip through the breathtaking wilderness of Algonquin Provincial Park. While the rugged adventure is a rite of passage at the start of the school year, it’s about far more than paddling and portaging—it's an opportunity for students to connect with nature, forge friendships, and embrace new challenges.
The trip provides a powerful introduction to environmental stewardship. As students navigate Algonquin’s pristine lakes and trails, they gain a deeper understanding of how to respect and protect the natural world. Immersed in this wilderness, they learn to appreciate the beauty and fragility of ecosystems, a lesson that stays with them long after they return to campus.
The expedition also strengthens bonds within the class. Working together to overcome the physical and mental demands of the trip—whether it's maneuvering canoes through narrow waterways, hiking across rugged portage routes, or setting up camp after a long day—students find themselves relying on one another. These shared experiences foster a deep sense of camaraderie, turning classmates into lifelong friends.
Beyond the friendships formed, the Algonquin Expedition equips students with valuable life skills. Teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership are essential on the trip, as is resilience in the face of challenging conditions. From unpredictable weather to tough portages, the students develop grit and perseverance, qualities that will serve them well in all aspects of their lives.
The tradition of the Algonquin Expedition remains a cornerstone of the LCS experience. It is a celebration of adventure, community, and personal growth—one that inspires students to push beyond their limits, both as individuals and as part of a team. Whether they’re disconnecting from the distractions of daily life, soaking in the beauty of the landscape, or simply enjoying the quiet moments around the campfire, each student leaves with memories and lessons that last a lifetime.
Reflecting on the trip, students often share the highlights and challenges that define their experience:
Disconnecting and Reconnecting: Many students appreciate the chance to unplug from technology, rediscovering the peace that comes from living in the moment and reconnecting with the people around them.
Teamwork and Perseverance: Helping one another through tough portages or working together to navigate unfamiliar waters highlights the importance of collaboration, patience, and persistence.
Moments of Beauty: From quiet mornings on the lake to starlit nights around the campfire, the natural beauty of Algonquin leaves a lasting impression, deepening students' appreciation for the environment.
Personal Growth: For many, the most challenging parts of the trip—like long days of paddling or difficult portages—are also the most rewarding. The sense of accomplishment that comes from pushing past personal limits is a key takeaway for students.
