At Lakefield College School, our Guidance team is committed to staying connected with the latest research, trends, and developments in post-secondary education. Through initiatives like our LCS University Fairs, we foster meaningful connections with admissions representatives from top universities around the globe. Our extensive provincial and national networks ensure we stay informed about new opportunities and pathways for students. Beyond that, our team’s global travels are integral to building strong relationships and enhancing LCS’s reputation with top-tier universities. Over the past year, our guidance counsellors have visited universities across Canada, the USA, Spain, Ireland, and the Netherlands.
Last month, Ms. Hart ’97 P ’28 and Ms. Miller from our Guidance team attended the 80th annual
NACAC conference in Los Angeles, North America’s premier event for guidance counsellors and admissions officers. With over 7,000 experts from over 40 countries, the conference provided myriad opportunities to engage with global leaders in post-secondary counselling. By participating in conversations about emerging programs, evolving application processes, and new scholarship opportunities, our team ensures that every LCS student receives exceptional guidance tailored to their unique aspirations.
The week was packed with valuable experiences, from pre-conference university tours and dynamic workshops to a college fair and networking events. One of the key topics discussed was the growing role of technology in the college admissions process, including the use of artificial intelligence in essay writing. Speakers explored the balance between empowering students to take ownership of their post-secondary choices and providing supportive guidance, as well as ways parents can help without adding unnecessary pressure. A recurring theme among colleagues was the shift away from standardized test scores in U.S. admissions, emphasizing holistic approaches to evaluating applicants.
We believe in the power of collaboration and the exchange of ideas. Connecting with other counselling professionals at events like NACAC allows us to share best practices and gain fresh insights to better serve our students. Ms. Hart ’97 P’28 and Ms. Miller returned to LCS inspired and equipped with new strategies to guide students toward their goals.
At LCS, we’re proud to offer students the advantage of a dedicated and globally engaged Guidance team. Whether at home or abroad, we remain focused on ensuring every student has the tools, resources, and support they need to navigate their future with confidence.
