Lakefield College School’s Grade 12 Outdoor Education (OE) double credit integrated classes embarked on a canoe trip down the Lower Madawaska River. This adventure was more than just a journey through rapids and campsites; it was a testament to the skills, teamwork, and resilience our students have developed throughout their years in our OE program.
In the weeks leading up to the trip, students prepared diligently. Through skill-building sessions and hands-on practice, they honed their Moving Water techniques and practiced Canoe-over-Canoe rescues to ensure everyone was confident and ready for the challenges ahead. Their dedication and focus during these preparatory classes set the stage for a successful trip.
The journey began with ideal weather, creating the perfect conditions for an enjoyable first paddle. The group navigated to the first set of rapids, where they reacquainted themselves with paddling in Moving Water. The rapids provided an opportunity for them to practice their skills and enjoy the excitement of navigating the river’s dynamic flow. After navigating the fast-moving water, they continued downriver, setting up camp at Narrows Rapids, where they enjoyed the evening atmosphere and relaxed under the stars, watching a nearby campfire flicker on the opposite shore.
On the second day, our students continued their downriver expedition, scouting and running various rapids along the way. The day’s most challenging moments involved two portages—one around the scenic Slate Falls and another navigating rapids filled with boulders. The teamwork displayed during these portages highlighted our students' growing expertise as they worked together to transport gear and canoes efficiently.
That evening, the group camped at Crooked Rapids, enjoying a picturesque sunset while cooking pita pizzas over the fire. Initially cooking in smaller groups, they soon gathered together to share stories from the day’s adventures. It was a memorable night that brought everyone closer and marked the trip's halfway point.
On the final day, the crew packed up camp and paddled the remaining kilometres to Griffith. The last significant portage around Highland Falls tested their coordination, but the group handled it seamlessly, demonstrating mutual support and cooperation. By noon, the classes were greeted by the bus and began their journey back to Lakefield.
The Madawaska Canoe Trip was a remarkable experience that offered our Grade 12 OE students the opportunity to bond, refine their skills, and immerse themselves in the beauty of the outdoors. From the thrill of running rapids to the shared moments around the campfire, it was a perfect blend of adventure, learning, and camaraderie.
Special thank you to: Mike Judson, Hayden Canning, Anna Richardson, Andrew Johnston, Janice Greenshields, Garret Hart, Peter O'Grady, and Peter Andras for using their personal time (during the busy end of our first Mod) to make this trip possible for our Grade 12 students.
