Hands-On Learning in the Great Outdoors: Grade 11 Canoe Trip

Ms. Connelly and Mr. Bemrose's Grade 11 Integrated Outdoor Education classes spent the fall Modules preparing for an unforgettable canoe trip to Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park, which took place from Thursday, October 17 to Saturday, October 19.

In the lead-up to the trip, students honed their outdoor skills through a variety of prep sessions, focussing on essential aspects such as camp setup, outdoor cooking, safety, trip journaling, canoeing, and portaging. While on the trip, students also took on leadership roles by teaching their group members about key outdoor topics, including weather patterns, native plant identification, and strategies for avoiding animal encounters.

Adding an extra layer of preparation, two classes had the unique opportunity to work with Chef Tyler from Camp Kitchen. They learned about freeze-dried camp meals and prepared their own chili mac ‘n’ cheese, which was freeze-dried for the trip—a delicious and practical addition to their outdoor adventure.

The trip was a great success, thanks to the students' enthusiasm, teamwork, and the beautiful fall weather. A special thank you to our dedicated trip leaders: Alaina Connelly, Garret Hart, Mike Judson, Anna Richardson, Abi Phillippe, Carmelo Saffioti, and Alecia Golding, for guiding our students through this enriching experience.
