Why Campus Visits Matter in Post-Secondary Planning

As your student begins to explore post-secondary options, one of the most valuable steps they can take is visiting campuses. Whether virtual or in-person, these visits provide an opportunity to experience university life firsthand, helping students make informed decisions about where they will spend the next chapter of their academic careers.

Why Visit?

Campus visits allow students to:
  • Get a feel for the campus environment – Is it urban or rural? What are the facilities like? How does the campus culture resonate with them?
  • Explore student life – What clubs, activities, and support services are available? Will they feel like they belong?
  • Tour academic facilities – What are the classrooms, libraries, and labs like? Can they imagine themselves studying there?
  • Engage with current students and staff – There’s no better way to get an authentic picture of a university than to hear directly from those who are living it every day.

With Lake Katchewanooka frozen and the LCS campus looking like a winter wonderland, it is hard to believe that spring and summer are approaching. But now is the perfect time for your family to begin planning campus visits. Here are a few opportunities that could help shape their post-secondary journey:

Tour Opportunities for Spring/Summer 2025

  1. Ontario University Open Houses - Most Ontario universities host open house events during the March Break. This is a great time for students to explore campuses, meet faculty, and learn about program offerings. Keep an eye out for dates and registration information through the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC).
  2. New York City University Tour - If your teenager is considering universities in New York City, this staycation option over Easter weekend (April 17-21, 2025) could be the perfect opportunity to visit multiple campuses in one trip. Students should complete the expression of interest form by February 10, 2025, to secure their spot.
  3. Bespoke Campus Tours - For those families considering US universities but don’t have the opportunity to visit together, companies such as VerveSmith and TS College Tours provide organized tours, helping students get a feel for various institutions and regions; UniVisits offers a similar service for the UK and Europe. This is an excellent chance to explore options beyond our borders when your family might be elsewhere in the world and not able to make the trip.
  4. Spanish University Tour For students interested in studying abroad, the JCT Spanish University Tour is a fantastic option. Over 12 days (June 22 - July 3, 2025), students will visit some of Spain’s top universities offering English degree programs. This immersive experience will not only allow students to see a variety of Spanish campuses but also explore the cultural vibrancy of Spain itself and hike the Camino de Santiago.

Encouraging Exploration

A campus visit is one of the best ways for students to envision their future. Whether they are considering universities close to home or across the globe, these visits provide essential insight into which school might be the best fit for their academic goals, personal interests, and future career ambitions.
We encourage parents to find time on the family calendar to support students in taking full advantage of these opportunities to explore campuses, ask questions, and gather the information they need to make thoughtful decisions about their post-secondary education.
If you have any questions about these opportunities, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your student’s guidance counsellor.
