You Belong: Leadership and Diversity Summit

LCS students will be joining discussions about diversity, equity, inclusion, and leadership with their peers from other independent schools at the You Belong: Leadership and Diversity Summit on Friday, February 19, 2021, hosted by Bishop Strachan School.

The theme of the 2021 summit is "You Belong" and the aim is to facilitate greater discussion and collaboration between students with broad perspectives from independent schools across Canada. The summit will provide students with the opportunity to share and learn from one another’s experiences; it will also help create a stronger sense of allyship and interschool connections.

This conference presents an important opportunity for our students to build on their skills and feel empowered to take on a leadership role in their communities with regard to diversity and inclusion.

LCS is proud to announce that Lily Bowman ’21 was selected as a student workshop leader at “You Belong”! In her workshop, Lily will discuss white privilege; her peer leaders will cover various topics including microaggressions, language barriers, and strategies for becoming a leader of diversity, equity and inclusion at school and beyond.

“It is only by opening ourselves up to learning that we can grow and encourage our schools to be better places for today's students and future generations to come,” said Sarah Jiang ’22 (one of the students who plans to attend “You Belong”).

Activist, writer, and co-founder of Canada’s Black Lives Matter campaign,  Sandy Hudson will deliver the keynote address at the summit.. Hudson is an inspiration to many who are active in the anti-black racism community and her writing has been featured in major publications such as The New York Times, Toronto Life, and CBC News.

Stay tuned to hear more about our students’ experience at the conference!
