Beginning a Historic Year
“And so we begin this historic year.”
Our first community Chapel gatherings took place this week with the opportunity for our students to come together in their Houses to participate. Our new schedule has allowed intentional dedicated time for community building and our House model has encouraged our students to get to know one another, new and returning, day and boarding, and domestic and international.
Anne-Marie Kee, Head of School and Foundation, addressed our school community in Chapel with a welcome to our new staff, a special acknowledgment to our remote students, a waterfront surprise and an important reminder of our school values. LCS is special, not because our students follow the rules but because they live by our values.
- Education of the Whole Person: Having dedicated time in our new schedule to focus on our mind, body and spirits upholds our commitment to be better together. The launch of Wellness Wednesdays yesterday is part of our intentional pursuit to take care of our whole selves.
- Trust: This has always meant that it’s important you’re doing the right thing even when no one is looking, because trust works two ways. In this day and age, with a new emphasis on Safety First, we are called to make good choices in terms of wearing masks, maintaining physical distancing, performing daily health screens and hand sanitizing often. We trust that individuals will do everything they can to stay safe, trusting others to do the same. As a community, we will all stay safe if we do the right thing and trust one another.
- Healthy, Caring Community: LCS is a place where we are welcoming of people from all over the world, of different sexual orientations, from different religions and with different values that guide us. It is important that everyone feels safe here. This means we have to be proactive in taking care of each other. We must embrace diversity and be empathetic. In moments where we are challenged, we need to take the time to pause and think about our reaction. It’s not easy to be a community like ours where we’re living and learning together for the next 10 months, but find opportunities to live the values of a healthy, caring community.
- Individuality: We celebrate our unique gifts here at LCS. Think about how you want to spend this year, whether in sports, arts, clubs, trying something new, or returning to something you loved before. Make the most out of all this year can hold.
- Learning: Ask good questions, try your best and be curious. Make this commitment now and for the rest of your life. Make this a year where you are always learning and enjoying the opportunities available.
- Citizenship: We care how you care, connect and contribute and how you contribute is incredibly important. Remember others in our community and think about how you can live a life of service to others.
- Environmental Stewardship: Being an Outdoors Every Day school is more than enjoying our campus, waterfront and sunshine. It’s also our contribution to the environment and our students who ensure that we can be leaders in our commitment to our natural world. Think about your daily actions and if there is a way you want to make a greater impact.
“This is going to be a great year. It’s requiring all of us to be a little more serious as we deal with this global pandemic. Think about people all around the world who are affected by COVID-19 and how each of us can make a contribution to keeping one another safe. This also brings the opportunity to make this a fantastic school year. We are so lucky to be back together and we will make this, I think, one of the best years in Lakefield’s history.”
