History Comes to Life: Mr. Gilfillan’s Grade 10 Students Get Hands-On with WWII Artifacts
Students in Mr. Gilfillan’s Grade 10 War Experience (blended English History) Course experienced a lesson like no other as their classroom transformed into an interactive WWII exhibit. The unique display gave students an up-close look at the weapons, uniforms, and insignia that shaped Canada’s role in the 20th Century.
Leading the experience was local historian and war collector Jimmy Chapman, who brought history to life with his vast collection of wartime artifacts. As he shared the stories behind each piece, students had the rare opportunity to handle decommissioned weapons—an experience that left many in awe.
"I can’t believe we’re actually allowed to do this,” one student remarked, marveling at the sheer weight of the weapons. The hands-on approach provided a deeper appreciation of the challenges soldiers faced on the battlefield.
Beyond the artifacts, the War Exhibit served as a powerful reminder of Canada’s sacrifices during wartime. In today’s ever-changing world, this immersive experience reinforced the importance of remembering the past and the freedoms we often take for granted.
