Lives of Leadership

By Vera Wilcox

Another memorable, inspiring time was experienced in Boston on the "Lives of Leadership" trip this year, marking this our 5th year. Mr. Peter O' Grady, Director of Leadership and Ms. Vera Wilcox took five students, Stephanie Parent '20, Maxwell McWilliams '20, Gavin Plunkett '21, Ana Jervis '21 and Sofiia Onopiirenko '21 to Boston to join Dr. Betsy McGregor and Barb McGregor for five incredible days of visiting Harvard's Graduate schools in Design, Business, Law, Kennedy School Institute of Politics, Education and visited Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Boston College, including the Martin Luther King private library.

We attended a workshop on storytelling, a forum on Presidential Investigations: What Lies Ahead, heard a conversation with Andrew Gillum, the Florida Democratic Party's first African-American nominee for governor and Aisha Moodie-Mills, had the opportunity to speak with graduate students, professors and CNN legal analyst-Michael Zelding. The group was also able to take advantage of LCS community and met up with alumni including Cameron Maltman '16 ( Harvard), April (Sawyer) Finlayson '03 (Harvard Graduate School of Education) and Grant Tucker '17  (Northeastern University).

We stayed at the Irving House, just outside of Harvard Square, where each morning we met with fascinating guests from all over the country who were either lecturing, presenting or associated with Harvard, or who worked at the Irving House and had an interesting past.  They generously gave of their time with breakfast sessions devoted to their areas of interest/expertise—an artist astrophysicist, Director of Music at Oregon and in charge of PhD composers, and a former photojournalist from the Diplomatic corps in Bulgaria who immigrated to Boston with her young children.

We were all inspired by the stories shared with us which helped our students in the formation and presentation of their personal narratives. Each of our speakers challenged and were challenged by our students. All of them commented on how insightful, thoughtful and articulate they were with their questions. It truly was an amazing trip for all of us!
