Ryder House Extension Officially Opens with a Celebration of Community and Generosity

On Saturday, May 25, Lakefield College School marked a significant milestone with the grand opening of the Ryder House Extension during our Home to the Grove alumni reunion. This day, always special for bringing together students, staff, parents, and alumni, held even greater significance this year as the community gathered to celebrate the culmination of a project that enhances the living experience for Ryder House students.

The renovation project, made possible by a generous gift from the Ryder Family, is part of LCS's strategic plan to revitalize and enhance its residential houses. Named in honour of Florence Ryder, the extension aims to provide an enriched environment that fosters camaraderie, collaboration, and personal growth among boarding and day students, advisors, and the broader community.

Head of Ryder House, Darren, captured the essence of the day in his speech, highlighting the profound impact the renovation has had on the Ryder community. "Anyone who has ever lived in Ryder House or has known someone who has lived here will know just how special this particular community is," he remarked. "It is more than just a building on our beautiful campus; it is something that you become proud of and something you work for."

The renovation includes a 2,200-square-foot addition, a welcoming new entrance, a larger common room with a kitchen, additional boarding student rooms, a new day student room, renovated bathrooms, and outdoor amenities space. These updates align with LCS’s commitment to sustainability, designed to be super-insulated and airtight, using less energy, and ensuring more comfort and durability over time.

Darren shared personal anecdotes that illustrated the tangible benefits of the new spaces. "Every day, Ryderians gather in our common room, playing games, telling jokes, and bonding with each other. The new Day Room enables our Day Students to feel like there is a space that belongs to them within the House. Furthermore, the addition of a kitchen has had a tremendous impact on our community."

One memorable moment was the unprompted organization of a 'Farewell Breakfast' for a departing exchange student, showcasing the initiative and camaraderie fostered by the new facilities. Despite the humorous mishap of under-cooked breakfast items, the event highlighted the opportunities for bonding and creating lasting memories.

Darren expressed deep gratitude to Tom Ryder '53, P '77 '01, GP '08 '13 '15 '25, whose generous support set the extension in motion. "Words cannot adequately convey the immense gratitude that the entire Ryder community feels towards him and his family for their unwavering support and dedication."

The Ryder House Extension stands as a testament to the power of philanthropy and collaboration in education, promoting a feeling of home and a sense of belonging that will benefit the Ryder community for years to come.
