A Year to Remember at The Grove: Goodbye to the Class of 2024

A warm thank you to all of the students, families, faculty, and staff who made this year at The Grove so special. The Lakefield College School (LCS) community came together on June 22 to celebrate the end of the academic year and the exceptional achievements of its students.

Lefevre Field, overlooking Lake Katchewanooka, provided a picturesque setting for this year's Closing ceremony. Highlights included the Head of School address from Anne Marie Kee P '17 ‘19, recognition of extensive student success across all grades, and the insightful keynote speech from LCS Board Chair Hugh MacDonnell ’85 P ’18 ’27. Throughout the year, students excelled in academic, artistic, and athletic pursuits, earning major awards and distinctions for their efforts at Lakefield and beyond.

In her Head of School address, Ms. Kee highlighted the significant impact LCS has on its students and emphasized the importance of carrying their experiences at The Grove into the future. She also reminisced about the traditions and rites of passage students enjoyed throughout the 2023/24 school year:

“Special places have special languages, and forever if you meet someone from The Grove, a fellow alum, you will also reminisce about OE, Paper houses, open houses, and actual houses, Haunted Halls, Gladiator Day, K-Rod, Algonquin, the Ondaatje Challenge, Ted Pope Day, chapel talks, and grad jumps. [...] My hope is you remember how you felt when you skated on our rink, perhaps for the first time, you woke up in a tent, you got a seat at the high tables, you finally got the house dance move for air bands, or you got caught in the rain. May you remember the bonds you made during those late-night talks. All of these experiences are found at our little school in the middle of nowhere.”
— Head of School and Foundation Anne-Marie Kee

In his keynote speech, Hugh MacDonnell outlined three central themes: resilience, challenge, and grace. He reflected on his experiences at The Grove as a student and parent, highlighting how the Class of 2024 exemplified these qualities during their time at the school. To close his speech, MacDonnell shared an endearing statement with the graduating class.

“Class of 2024 this place will always be your home, we will actually miss you a lot when you leave today. But know that whether you are near or far, visit monthly, or not for 25 years. You are always welcome here, we will leave the lights on for you.”
— Hugh MacDonnell ‘85 P ‘18 ‘27 Chair of Lakefield College School Foundation

With the 2023/24 school year drawing to a close, the school is excited both to see the graduating class excel in their future endeavours, and return to The Grove as engaged alumni and community members.
