  What led you to become an Associate Faculty?

  I became an Associate Faculty for two reasons. The first was because I knew I enjoyed working with kids and teens. However, I didn't know if I would enjoy working with them in an educational setting, having been a camp counselor for many years. This job offered the perfect place to allow me to be curious about my future career. It allows you to experience teaching, coaching, outdoor learning, theatrical productions, mentoring and guiding youth, and so much more! It ultimately has led to my enrolment in Teachers College after two years here. The second was because the people I met when interviewing, and touring the campus, immediately demonstrated how community focused Lakefield College is. There is a shockingly high number of genuinely caring and friendly staff who will always seek to help you as a mentor and a friend. This has been invaluable to my experience as an Associate Faculty, given the living-on-campus aspect of the job, and is a main reason for wanting to do a second year. 

   

  What will you take away from the position?

  I will take away a new found sense of direction from working as an Associate Faculty at Lakefield. I started as someone with many options to take for my career but very little substance to build a career path off of. I will leave Lakefield having gained this sense of direction, and having acquired incredibly practical and relevant experience to pursue a Teaching Degree. This new path of mine is emboldened by a sense of achievement, competence and confidence in my abilities. I believe that this job could have shown me any direction to take and given me enough experience to pursue that career, mine happened to become teaching. And to make it sweeter, I get to take away all the memories I created with the staff and students. From Algonquin Park canoe trips with the Grade 12s in my residence, to the most fun downhill ski day with the entire school, and the countless hours I got to have fun and play on the most beautiful campus imaginable. I will take these wherever I go.

  What led you to become an Associate Faculty?

  I had a couple of years experience teaching at the primary level before my role as an Associate Faculty. I wanted to gain experience with high school students, as well as have the opportunity to interact more with students beyond the classroom. I was confident that with the additional aspects of leading co-curriculars and being involved with boarding life, I would be able to foster deeper connections with students.

   

  What should applicants know about the job?
  There are so many different parts to the job, so it can be hard to fully grasp the job description until you’re actually doing it. There’s a lot to learn, a lot to remember and a lot going on. With that though, the staff here want you to succeed and are your teammates; don’t be afraid to ask questions, get out of your comfort zone, and learn from mistakes. It’s a challenging position, but you’ll learn so much about yourself and be rewarded in ways other jobs can’t even begin to offer.
